FABULOUS FEATHERS
(B3.2)

Fabulous Feathers is a parametric software tool for Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) that effectively creates 3D-printed hair structures embodied in forms such as feathers. A software tool was designed to create a variety of generative 3D-printable feathers using the Full Control Python library. The resulting feather, along with chain mail and a spring fabric lattice, serve as proof of concept for the printing of delicate hairline structures, as well as a demonstrator of the design possibilities of hairline structures using Full Control.

Traditionally, the design pipeline for FFF 3D printing involves CAD, slicer and printing to achieve the desired result. Fabulous Feathers enables precise control of the printing process, allowing fine details to be printed successfully and more effectively eliminating errors in the design by substituting the CAD and slicer in the traditional pipeline with Full Control.

In contrast with existing projects using 3D-printed FFF wearable materials, Fabulous Feathers demonstrates the potential of a fully open-source parametric FFF design to create dynamic structures, enabling others to replicate the design and process. Fabulous Feathers proposes a new method in 3D printing and provides examples for the wider 3D-printable and open-source design communities.
